The University of Bristol has a leading role in the SWAN Programme, contributing world-class expertise in the areas of physical layer wireless research, RF technologies, and Dynamic Spectrum Access. The University team and business partners are able to make extensive use of the Communication Systems and Networks (CSN) Research Group laboratory facilities in SWAN’s mix of fundamental and applied research.
The CSN Group was formed in 1985 to address the research demands of the fixed and wireless communications sectors. It combines fundamental academic research with a strong level of industrial application. The Group has well-equipped laboratories with state-of-the-art test and measurement equipment and first-class computational facilities. The Group has joined forces with the University's High Performance Networks (HPN) Group and the Photonics Research Group to form the Smart Internet Lab.
Principal Investigator
Professor Mark Beach – Professor of Radio Systems Engineering
Professor Mark Beach has over 30 years of experience in physical layer wireless research including spread spectrum; adaptive and smart antennas for capacity and range extension in wireless networks; MIMO aided connectivity for through-put and spectrum efficiency enhancement; millimetre wave technology, as well as secure, robust and frequency agile radio frequency technologies. He leads the delivery of the UKRI/EPSRC SWAN Prosperity Partnership, is a Co-Director of the CDT in Communications and also the School Research Impact Director. Professor Beach was the Head of Electrical & Electronic Engineering from 2006 to 2010.
